“Building towers” with sodium acetate trihydrate

On the school-free Day of Repentance and Prayer, the second “ING Day – Immerse yourself in the world of technology!” took place at the Faculty of Engineering (FAN) as part of the current program of the Student Research Center (SFZ) of the Technology Alliance Upper Franconia (TAO). Nearly 50 highly motivated students – it was a school holiday, after all – showed up at the faculty. After a short lecture, the children were allowed to try their hand at being engineers in workshops.

Once again this year, the workshop “Cold Season – Cold Hands?” at the Department of Engineering Thermodynamics and Transport Processes was fully booked after a short time.

Ms. Heshe and Mr. Müller, who supervised the workshop, worked with the children to explore the question “How do I store heat? And above all, how can I reactivate it when I need it?”

The children then eagerly set about making their own pocket warmers. Now the stored heat can be activated at any time and no one has to freeze anymore. The “tower building” with the previously obtained sodium acetate trihydrate once again generated a lot of enthusiasm.
