V.l. Clemens Berger and Matthias Welzl

From 2nd to 7th August, the 18th International Heat Transfer Conference took place in Rio de Janeiro. Matthias Welzl and Clemens Berger participated at the conference program representing the LTTT. The IHTC is recognized as the world's most renowned conference in heat transfer research, bringing experts in this field together every four years.

Matthias presented his work titled "Influence of thermophysical properties of refrigerants on nucleate boiling heat transfer" which was co-authored by Andrea Luke and Fatih Meral from the University of Kassel. The evaluation of an up-to-date database demonstrated the importance of this topic by comparison of different experimental and calculation methods applied to the norm heat transfer coefficient of the established correlation in the VDI Heat Atlas.

In his contribution "Experimental investigation of the in-tube condensation heat transfer for novel refrigerants at low mass fluxes", Clemens investigated the impact of part load operation in thermodynamic cycle applications on the heat transfer process. His presented measurement results clearly identify further challenges as multiple commonly used correlations are not capable of reliable predictions for heat transfer coefficients under the chosen operating conditions. Clemens' work was also a representation of the DFG SPP 2403 “Carnot Batteries: Inverse Design from Markets to Molecules” at the IHTC-18.

We are already looking forward to the next edition of the IHTC, which will be held in London in 2030.
