Prize for Best Master's Thesis in Energy Technology Awarded to Anne Voss

Bayreuth, October 17, 2026

At this year's graduation ceremony of the Faculty of Engineering, the FEL Prize for the Best Master's Thesis in Energy Technology was awarded to Anne Voss, M.Sc. The prize was endowed by UBT Future Energy Lab Wunsiedel GmbH (FEL) and carries a monetary award of €500. It recognizes her outstanding achievements in the Master's degree program in Energy Technology as well as her master's thesis entitled “Development of Soft Sensors for Gas Analysis in PEM Electrolysis Plants Using Machine Learning and Physical Modeling”.

Her master's thesis was completed in cooperation with Siemens AG at the Chair of Engineering Thermodynamics and Transport Processes (LTTT) and was primarily supervised by Dr.-Ing. Matthias Welzl. In her work, Ms. Voss developed a soft sensor for predicting the hydrogen content in the oxygen product stream of a PEM electrolysis plant. During the award ceremony, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dieter Brüggemann, Managing Director of FEL, emphasized that Ms. Voss combined machine learning methods and physical expertise in an outstanding manner. Her work therefore demonstrates a promising approach to replacing costly gas analysis equipment with soft sensors in the future.

Even after successfully completing her studies, Ms. Voss remains active in the field of energy technology. The LTTT team wishes her every success and all the best as she begins her new position in system operations at Bayernwerk Netz GmbH.
